High performance computing in every PC

MATRIX VISION closes the gap between well-priced PlayStation 3 systems and Cell/B.E. BladeCenter®. A PlayStation 3 is practical for evaluation and software development but for professional solutions this platform is obviously unsuitable. Considering its huge performance the new mvXCell-8i processor board represents a solution which completely fits in to the technical and commercial environment commonly found in PC based image processing applications.

Super computer capabilities on one board

The mvXCell-8i is based on the PowerXCell™ 8i processor and provides five times the double precision-performance floating-point math compared to the original Cell/B.E. processor and achieves 180 GFLOPS single precision and 90 GFLOPS double precision as a maximum peak. Furthermore, it uses a double-data-rate two (DDR2) memory interface of 4 GB. Both features are needed for image/movie processing and codecs that need high-definition and real-time.

Ease of use and reduced costs

The mvXCell-8i is a double-wide PCIe board, which can be simply integrated into Linux PC1. For this reason, it reduces hardware costs and operational cost significantly compared to large scale clustering systems.

Runs Linux and development environment

The mvXCell-8i runs Fedora as the local operating system. To develop Cell applications, the Software Development Kit (SDK) for Multicore Acceleration from IBM can be used.

2 Gigabit Ethernet ports

Two Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports offer large bandwidth of 125 MB/s in each case for external communication.
 

Image acquisition for mvXCell-8i

The GigE cameras of the mvBlueCOUGAR series2, which can be connected to both GigE ports of the board directly, as well as the mvHYPERION frame grabbers3, which communicate with mvXCell via PCIe, are suitable image processing front ends for mvXCell.
